Dr. Visura Pathirana is a nuclear engineer, advanced materials specialist, and process systems engineer with expertise in thermal-fluid systems, materials science, process optimization, and safety-critical engineering.
He serves as a key technical leader for Elite’s critical minerals platform, overseeing research, process development, and technology evaluation for the extraction, beneficiation, refining, and production of advanced materials.
His background in nuclear engineering provides a strong foundation for designing and optimizing complex industrial systems, where precise control of physical and chemical processes is essential. He applies this expertise to improve recovery rates, product purity, energy efficiency, and operational safety across critical minerals such as cobalt, graphite, copper, nickel, manganese, and rare earth elements.
In his role, Dr. Pathirana leads technical assessments of processing technologies, supports pilot- and commercial-scale development, evaluates emerging innovations, and helps integrate refining and materials manufacturing systems.
He also works with global partners, engineering firms, and research institutions to advance secure and sustainable critical minerals supply chains across Africa, Asia, and the United States.
He holds a Ph.D. in Nuclear Engineering from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, with research experience in reactor systems, thermal-hydraulic analysis, materials performance, and safety-critical engineering.
